About the opportunity

Are you passionate about environmental protection and sustainability? We have a rewarding temporary opportunity for you to join our team at the Cessnock Waste Management Centre as a Landfill Environment Officer on a 12 month contract.

In this pivotal role, you will oversee compliance with the Environmental Protection Licence, drive improvements in the landfill’s environmental performance, and integrate Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) into all Council activities. Your work will be central to advancing our environmental stewardship and regulatory adherence.

Some key responsibilities will be:

  • Reviewing and updating the Landfill Environmental Management Plan (LEMP), Pollution Response Incident Management Plan (PRIMP), and other crucial environmental documentation required by the EPA;
  • Conducting regular audits of both operational and closed sites to maintain rigorous environmental standards; 
  • Coordinating site monitoring programs, including methane, groundwater, and leachate assessments, to ensure compliance; and
  • Leading staff training sessions on environmental compliance and interpreting monitoring results to propose and implement corrective actions for any exceedances.

Remuneration

$85,156 - $97,929  per annum plus superannuation

About you

To thrive in this role, you should hold a degree in environmental science, environmental health, environmental engineering, waste management, or a related field and experience in managing licensed landfill facilities is essential.
